If a parent is crazy about anime, no regular cartoons will do. Other choices are considered for a child’s birthday celebration, especially if it’s the first one. No Mickey Mouse or Fairly Oddparents for this baby, only a favorite anime will do for this child!
Anime enthusiasts will be the first to tell you that there are types of anime not suitable for the younger generation since there are those that are R-rated! There are anime created exclusively for children, like the frog alien Sergeant Keroro, the Pokemon series that seems to be everywhere nowadays, the adventures of the young boy Ponyo, and the child heroes of Shugo Chara. How about adapting Sergeant Keroro for a boy’s (or girl’s) anime-themed birthday party?
Sergeant Keroro is the story of a frog alien that was sent to earth in order to conquer it. Unfortunately for them, they’ve fallen in love with the earth and humans, too! The aliens are colored green, purple, black, pink, and yellow, and these are the colors you will be basing your color scheme on. Balloons colored spring green, soft purple, cherry pink, black, and lemon yellow are used to decorate the area. You can print out the eyes of the aliens and stick them on the appropriate color balloons with double sided tape. Make the room more festive by hanging streamers from the ceiling and letting them dangle down. There is anime-themed music too that you can play.
You can decorate the children’s table with these colors. Cover the table with a green cloth and finished off with toppers in the complementary colors. Put a flat of flowers in the middle of the table and set a figure of one of the anime characters on it. Set some bowls of candies like jelly beans all around in solid colors – yellow, black, green, pink, and purple. Set the kid tables with colorful plates and utensils and top it with a white napkin tied with one of the complementary colors.
The cake table should look as great as the kids’ table. Cover the table with a plain colored cloth and put on a contrasting colored top. Raise the cake up using a pedestal cake stand and surround the bottom with the anime figurines and colored raffia ribbons. You can also put the favors for the kids around the table to make it more of the centerpiece for the party.
Why not break from tradition and create a cupcake tower instead? Frost the cupcakes in the same colors (black paste food coloring is available at baking specialty stores) and sprinkle them with star shaped sprinkles. Arrange them on a cupcake tree elevated on the cake stand and put a few more with the favors on the table if they can’t fit.
Of course frog’s legs aren’t an option here, so you could serve some of the food that Keroro enjoys on the show. Onigiri or rice balls are easily made and filled with a tuna salad and eaten like a sandwich. Keroro also loves sushi, which you can adapt for children by filling with strips of avocado, or peeled cucumber and a little mayonnaise, or strips of sausage and cheese. Serve this with a more mundane deli platter with vegetable sticks and a dip for the not-so-adventurous. A more comfortable dessert of cookies and ice cream fills out this menu nicely. As for drinks, a choice of juices would be great for the kids.
The goody bags for this anime birthday party are filled with gummy candies, anime stickers, pencils, and anime notepads. An eraser or a gummy frog would be a wonderful addition.
