Celebrate the Big Day with a Babar Birthday Party

July 30th, 2010

Babar made his first appearance in a book authored by Jean de Brunfhoff in 1931. This now classic tale had its roots in the bedtime stories his wife invented for their children.  The adventures of the King of the Elephants and Celeste, his wife, along with their children proved to be a way for the French children to learn new lessons and try new things. The story-telling mantle was passed on to Laurent de Brunhoff, Jean’s son. Laurent went on to write numerous books that were reprinted in many languages all over the world. Starting from 1946, there have been so many ways that Babar spread  his wisdom to children all over the world, through videos, books, a tv sries and movies, even a video opera that shows how much influence he has!

He’s been a European favorite as a party theme for decades, and more than one European author has quoted or mentioned Babar when talking about their childhood. While the theme is a little more difficult to execute in America, some things can be changed or adapted for a Babar birthday party.

There are lots of elephant invitations available commercially, so you can change it a bit by adding a crown sticker on his head! Babar is the King of the Elephants, right? But if that doesn’t suit you, then use one of the images on the website and make it your invitation. The particular points of the party can go inside.

Babar’s famous for his green suit, and that rich green color could definitely be a starting point for the party’s scheme. Other common colors in the books are pink, red, light gray, and aqua, so you can take your choices from those.

You can recreate Babar’s palace quite easily. The ubiquitous potted banana plants can be adapted by using potted tropical plants with wide leaves. Add lots of balloons in your chosen color scheme in bunches to the room. Make them more luxe by changing the string to gold ribbons. If you want to be different, don’t just tack the balloons together but make the base a decorative one. For example, you can have them coming out of a decorative pot instead of just attached to a chair.

Babar’s festivals usually have fabric flaglets strung all over the city. Why not adapt that instead of the usual streamers? Pinatas are fun additions too, you could look for one that is in a crown or elephant shape. And a terrific way to remind everyone who this party is based on is to put up Babar posters.

Set up the children’s area by decorating their table in a simple way to avoid accidents. After using a Babar-themed tablecloth, make a simple centerpiece from a half-round of floral foam covered with happy flowers like pink and red gerberas. Set the arrangement on an aqua plate and top it with a large, laminated cutout of Babar. With aqua plates and grey tableware, the table comes to life! Also use grey napkins here, tied up with an aqua bow.

Put on another Babar tablecloth for the cake table. Cover your cake stand with gold metallic paper that’s been cut into points like a crown.

Top a plain cake that’s been given a coat of aqua frosting with another laminated cutout of Babar. Fill it up with a lot of sugar leaves and flowers.

The favors could be a pretty elephant cookie paired with a paper crown and a bottle of bubbles. Long Live the King!
